⛪️ Investing in Cathedral Time!

Here's your weekly helping of interesting investing information and insights.

Opinion

I recently hopped on The Deep End podcast with Ryne Williams and Ari Gutman and talked about "Cathedral Investing." Standing outside St. Paul’s in London last Spring, I had a revelation: the people who dug the foundation in 1087 knew they’d be dead long before the roof was finished. They were "Ghost Architects" building a masterpiece they’d never actually sit inside of.

In investing, we’re doing the same thing. Your early contributions are the stones in the mud—they aren't "sexy," but without those you will never have the beautiful stained glass windows. You have to spend years in the "boring middle" stacking stones while the world screams for instant results. But if you stick to the blueprint, you eventually move from the mud into the "sanctuary"—that point where your portfolio becomes a legacy that protects your family for generations.

Next time you see an old cathedral, let it be a reminder: the world wants "right now," but the things that actually last are built on "Cathedral Time."

What I'm Reading

This article is a good reminder that investing with the crowd often feels comfortable, but comfort rarely leads to great results. If you want to spot opportunities others miss, you have to be willing to think independently instead of just following your “team.” [Link to article]

The always motivational and educational Morgan Housel hung out with the MFM guys and dropped his wisdom. My favorite takeaway was Morgan's realization that money is a tool that can be used for two things... to make the lives of those around you better or as a measuring stick. It's up to you decide how you want to use that tool.

Stocks Sold (AVERAGE)

  • 5 Uber Technologies (UBER) | $83.50 / I just didn't feel the conviction enough to buy more shares and wanted to send more money to the ROTH. Made ~4/share in a few weeks. If this drops to the low $70s, I'll reconsider vs what other options are available.

Here's your weekly helping of interesting investing information and insights. Opinion Quick update on why I brought IDVO and DGRO into the Roth this week and sold 25% of SCHY to make room. SCHY is still my core international holding—great fund, 0.08% expense ratio, 131 quality holdings. But IDVO does covered calls on international stocks, pays out around 5% instead of 3.5% and has much faster dividend growth. The 0.66% expense ratio is a bit high, but in a Roth all the tax issues that come...

Here's your weekly helping of interesting investing information and insights. Opinion This week we hit a major milestone as our net worth crept past the $1,000,000 mark. That includes all assets like investments, savings, home equity and kids 529 college funds. We shared nine things that helped us achieve seven figures in a very quick VIDEO. What wasn't shared was that literally nothing changed in our lives from a month ago other than numbers on a screen. When I told my wife we were...

Here's your weekly helping of interesting investing information and insights. Opinion Everyone's losing their minds over the Venezuela situation, but here's where I'm at after doing a little digging: Venezuela supplies about 1% of the world's oil. The global market is oversupplied right now. Gas prices here in Illinois are at a 5-year low. So no, I'm not panicking about what this means for my wallet or my daily life. Will the capture of Maduro have consequences? Sure. Are those consequences...
